A new study has found that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are linked to a rise in heart attacks and heart attacks in the United States.

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and the Cleveland Clinic were testing new drugs to treat heartburn and other stomach-related symptoms.

“We are excited to see that the evidence is still strong,” said lead researcher Dr. Michael O’Brien, Ph. D., professor of medicine and director of the Division of Gastroenterology at the Cleveland Clinic.

The study, presented at the American Heart Association’s Heart Disease Symposium, was published online inJAMA Network Openin June.

In an analysis of 2,000 people with heartburn and other stomach-related symptoms, researchers found that PPIs are linked to a 5.9-fold increase in the risk of developing a heart attack and a 7.6-fold increase in the risk of a heart attack in adults.

The study, published in theJournal of the American Heart Association, also found that there was a 19% risk of developing a heart attack in people taking PPIs.

The findings were published online Tuesday.

“The evidence for the link is very strong,” said lead author Dr. Michael O’Brien, who is not a member of the team.

PPIs are medications that inhibit the enzyme gastric acid production in the stomach. They are used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, a condition where acid in the stomach produces too much stomach acid.

“This is the first report of PPIs that is consistent with a causal link to heart attack,” O’Brien said.

In clinical trials of PPIs, patients who had been taking it for at least six months had a 14% increased risk of developing a heart attack compared to those on a placebo. The study, which was presented online inHeart Medicine, showed the drug reduced the risk of a heart attack by about 5%.

A previous study showed the drug had an even greater effect on the risk of developing a heart attack than a placebo.

“This finding is very encouraging and indicates that the benefits of PPI use can be substantial,” said Dr. Daniel P. Rosenblatt, a gastroenterologist at the Cleveland Clinic who is not a member of the study team.

The new study, led by O’Brien and Paine, was published online June 5 inThe Journal of the American Heart Association. The study’s authors are the University of Pennsylvania and the Cleveland Clinic.

The researchers analyzed the data on 2,000 people with heartburn and other stomach-related symptoms, and found that patients taking the PPI had a 1.6-fold increased risk of a heart attack compared to those who didn’t take the drug.

The researchers also found that patients who took the PPI had a 17% increased risk of developing a heart attack compared to those who didn’t take the drug.

“Our findings are consistent with previous research that suggests that PPI use is associated with an increased risk of developing a heart attack,” said Paine, who was not a member of the study team.

The PPI was originally used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, in adults, and has been used to treat conditions like heartburn and acid reflux in adults for a number of years.

It works by blocking the acid production in the stomach.

“This new drug is an exciting development in the context of a long-term study,” Rosenblatt said.

The PPI is a non-steroidal drug that can cause stomach irritation or ulcers, which is a common side effect of taking PPIs.

PPIs can cause stomach pain, so the risk of stomach ulcers is increased, according to the study.

PPIs were added to the NSAIDS list of drugs that can cause heartburn or stomach pain. These drugs can also increase heartburn symptoms, such as chest pain.

Researchers found that in people taking the PPI, a combination of two drugs, esomeprazole (Nexium), and doxazosin (Cardura), increased the risk of a heart attack.

In people taking the NPI, they had an 8% increased risk of developing a heart attack compared to those who took the drug alone. However, the drug was not linked to increased heart attacks.
