A new study has found that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are linked to a rise in heart attacks and heart attacks in the United States.
Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and the Cleveland Clinic were testing new drugs to treat heartburn and other stomach-related symptoms.

The study, published in theJournal of the American Heart Association, also found that there was a 19% risk of developing a heart attack in people taking PPIs.

“The evidence for the link is very strong,” said lead author Dr. Michael O’Brien, who is not a member of the team.
PPIs are medications that inhibit the enzyme gastric acid production in the stomach. They are used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, a condition where acid in the stomach produces too much stomach acid.
“This is the first report of PPIs that is consistent with a causal link to heart attack,” O’Brien said.
In clinical trials of PPIs, patients who had been taking it for at least six months had a 14% increased risk of developing a heart attack compared to those on a placebo. The study, which was presented online inHeart Medicine, showed the drug reduced the risk of a heart attack by about 5%.
A previous study showed the drug had an even greater effect on the risk of developing a heart attack than a placebo.
“This finding is very encouraging and indicates that the benefits of PPI use can be substantial,” said Dr. Daniel P. Rosenblatt, a gastroenterologist at the Cleveland Clinic who is not a member of the study team.

The researchers analyzed the data on 2,000 people with heartburn and other stomach-related symptoms, and found that patients taking the PPI had a 1.6-fold increased risk of a heart attack compared to those who didn’t take the drug.
